Only one person alive could save her now.

“Thank goodness you’re here.” Lady Lavinia Holbrook flung open the heavy oak door of the cathedral antechamber and kicked the train of her satin wedding gown aside so her friend could enter. “Your timing could not be better. Margret just left.”

“That old dragon. She has a nose for mischief and spoiled many a grand lark.” Victoria Beaumont’s strawberry mouth tilted down at the corners before her humor returned. “Good morning, Lavinia. You are looking very…pre-wed.” She strolled inside with one eyebrow quirked as she took in her friend’s ivory dress, stocking feet, and bare head.

“Good morning,” Lavinia returned as emotion welled in her eyes. “How I’ve missed you.”

Emerald eyes met hers in an assessing glance before Victoria drew her in for a much-needed hug.

Although months went by since they last spoke, it felt as if no time had passed at all. Hope fluttered in Lavinia’s chest for the first time in weeks. Together, they would find a solution like they always did.

“Your mother will have a fit of apoplexy if she discovers me here. She is convinced I led your brother astray and holds me responsible for his death. I must confess your cryptic note inviting me to your antechamber before the wedding ceremony surprised me, and I came straight away. A loose chignon is all the time I allowed for my hair, and I walked out the door of my chamber as my maid tied the back of my gown. No doubt, Matilda will give me a tongue-lashing when I return.” Her friend’s dancing eyes said the maid’s irritation amused her. Tilting her head, she sobered. “I must say, you are too pale by half. The Lavinia I remember had mischievous eyes and a ready smile. What brought about the change? Am I summoned here as your knight in shining armor, I wonder? Had I known, I would have worn my plumed hat.”

Lavinia pictured her slender friend in a metal suit holding a drawn sword while her flaming red hair fanned out behind her in the breeze and smiled. “I had no one else to turn to. I spent the entire night contemplating my options, and your face kept popping up as the answer.”

“I should hope so. No one else has my experience getting you out of trouble.” Victoria untied the ribbons of her cape and nudged her chin toward the tea trolley.

“Do we have time for tea before the battle? Or should I ready my steed?”

Before Lavinia could reply, heavy footsteps approached with a determined ring.

“Quick, in here.” With a cry of terror, she shoved Victoria behind the changing screen and turned to face her executioner.

The heavy inner door to the chapel swung open with a bang, and the Earl of Holbrook stepped inside her sanctuary. Her father’s wide smile and sparkling eyes disappeared the second he closed the door.

A rock formed in her belly.

His gaze swept over her and darkened with anger.

“Your future husband grows impatient. We cannot delay the ceremony longer.” His lips thinned, and his gray eyes narrowed as he inspected her from the top of her bare head piled high with curls to the bottom of her stocking feet, peeking from beneath the hem of her white gown.

“Where the hell are your veil and shoes? And where is Margret? Really, Lavinia. You try my patience past my ability to endure. I commanded you to be ready at ten thirty. The time is now a quarter past, and you are not prepared. I will not allow you to insult the viscount further.” Tall and handsome with peppered black hair, her father wore his finest black linen suit, which consisted of satin breeches, a matching velvet overcoat trimmed with gold embroidery, a pristine white shirt beneath an intricately folded neckcloth, and high-heeled buckle shoes that caught the morning light. Despite being dressed in the height of fashion, his foul disposition ruined the effect.

“Every bride in the Ton arrives five minutes late as is fashionable. The ceremony is not scheduled until the eleventh hour.” Her chin rose in defiance as she stared at her father. “Even the condemned are executed on the stroke of the clock and not a moment before. I deserve no less and have given the viscount no insult.” Not yet, she amended. “’Twas not me parading my lover for all and sundry to see.”

The earl shot her a furious gaze. “Mind your tongue, girl.” His words cracked like a whip, and for a fleeting moment, she feared he would strike her. A heavy silence hung between them before his fists relaxed at his sides, and a cold mask of indifference settled over his face. “I have had enough of this nonsense. Your husband’s actions and who he associates with are none of your affair. Know your place, or you will learn it the hard way. Hudson is not a man to trifle with.”

Withdrawing a watch from the pocket of his gold silk vest, he checked the time, and his lips tightened.

“You are lucky the viscount favors you at all, such as you are. For reasons known to him alone, he wants you. This extravagant spectacle, with all its unnecessary pomp, was his idea. As for me, I would see you wed on the street in rags in exchange for the title to the hundred acres my wastrel uncle gambled away.” Snapping his watch closed, he replaced the article in his vest pocket. “I dare say I am getting the superior bargain.”

His icy words hit her like a runaway carriage. They were meant to hurt and found their target with remarkable accuracy.

“I want no more excuses. You have ten minutes before I drag you into the church barefoot and bareheaded if I must. Find your worthless maid and finish your preparations. I want this done. My patience is at an end. Do not anger me further, or you will rue the moment you were born.”

The door clicked with the solid thud of a cell door in Newgate prison, and Lavinia rushed forward to slide the bolt behind him with shaky fingers. I would see you wed on the street in rags…Damn them all to hell.

Christmas... in the News: Gift Ideas from ChatGPT, New Drive-thru Christmas Lights & Harrisburg Christmas & Gift Show

Welcome to this week's edition of Christmas... in the news. This is a weekly review of some of the Christmas articles and news over the last week.

Ho! Ho! Ho! There are only 31 days left until Christmas. Are you getting excited?

How is the decorating going at your place? Some of our outdoor lights are up, and the main tree--unlit and undecorated--made its way upstairs. Hurt my back recently, so trying not to overdue things.

Hallmark kindly delivered my Christmas card order, and I bought a dozen homemade cards at one of the three holiday bazaars I've attended so far. Bought a few gifts, too. Our youngest is coming home for Thanksgiving break on Tuesday, so we might travel out on Saturday or Sunday to another holiday fair in a neighboring town. We do our best to shop local as much as we can.

Some of my friends have experienced the first snow of the season. How about you? We might get a bit of the white stuff on Black Friday.

So, what's in this week's news? A lot! I'm sticking with a random selection of three items. We will start with something that has been in the news often lately: Artificial Intelligence.

The Guardian posted an article about using ChatGPT to help you find gifts for those you simply don't know how to buy for. It happens to all of us, right? Could AI give us a hand in finding that special gift? Read the article here to see what you think.

Fox23News out of Tulsa reported on a new drive-through Christmas lights display called the Magical Lights Adventure. The founder has said it is an immersive and interactive experience. You can watch the video here.

The Frederick News-Post reported that The Pennsylvania Christmas + Gift Show is returning to the PA Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg from Dec. 4 to 8. Now in its 41st year, it will feature more than 550 vendors. It will also include special events and other features. You can check out more here.

That's it for me today. Enjoy your week!

Christmas Romance Book Review: A Celtic Yuletide Carol by Jennifer Ivy Walker

Adventure and romance await you in A Celtic Yuletide Carol by Jennifer Ivy Walker.

After the loss of his wife, Sir Cardin, now known as Basati, the Basque Wolf, drowns his guilt with golden mead in raucous taverns, amassing incredible debt and acquiring dangerous enemies.

Ulla, the widowed daughter of a Viking chieftain, was rendered mute by trauma. She now avoids humans--especially babies and children--preferring the company of her wolf and falcon as she hunts in the Brocéliande Forest.

Summoned home by his dying mother's wish, Cardin finally meets the son he abandoned and Ulla, who is teaching his son to hunt. With the holidays approaching, Basati finds himself smitten with the beautiful Ulla as he bonds with his forsaken child. But with past enemies plotting against him, Basati is soon ensnared in a dangerous trap.

Can music lure his savage heart into the light of love?

The reader first meets a drunken Cardin after his brother Gaultier comes to collect him after another barfight has left him incapacitated. None too happy, Gaultier vows to bring his brother home. But it will be their mother's letter stating she wants to see her sons before she dies that brings them back, giving Cardin a chance to meet the son he abandoned on the the night he was born.

In the following chapter, the reader meets Ulla, who has experienced her own tragedy, which traumatized her so much that she lost her beautiful voice and is now mute. They also meet Cardin's parents and his son.

The romance unfolds between Cardin and Ulla nicely, but their happiness is threatened by powerful enemies determined to seek revenge on the Basque Wolf from Biarritz and motivated to interfere in world affairs.

While I found the opening a bit slow, once Cardin and Gaultier returned, the pace picked up and the fate of well-developed characters in A Celtic Yuletide Carol encouraged me to turn page after page to see how Cardin and Ulla's intense, yet new, romance would survive and if Cardin could become the father his son desperately wanted. With a hint of healing magic, fans of historical holiday romances will be intrigued with A Celtic Yuletide Carol

Christmas... in the News: Dwayne Johnson's "Red One" Opens, NBC Selects Best Artificial Trees & Boardman Christmas Cafe Opening on Christmas Day

Welcome to this week's edition of Christmas... in the news. This is a weekly review of some of the Christmas articles and news over the last week.

Hard to believe it is Sunday again. Are you feeling that Christmas joy? It is only 38 days away! Today, I took down the fall decorations in the house, cleaned off the mantle, and moved the furniture to bring up the main Christmas tree, hoping we can decorate it while our youngest is home for Thanksgiving break.

Via the AP National News, our local news station WWLP  reported that Dwayne Johnson's latest action comedy, Red One, in which Johnson plays Santa's bodyguard, opened to $34.1 million against a $200 million+ production budget. Read more about it here.

In case you're in the market for a new artificial tree, NBC Select has put together a list of their "11 Best Artificial Christmas Trees." You can find the article here.

People in Boardman, Ohio have something to look forward to on Christmas Day. That's the day that Boardman Christmas Cafe is opening! WKBN First News 27 interviewed founder and owner April Mason about all the excitement. Read more here.

One last note before I leave you. In last week's edition, I shared the origins of this year's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. On November 14, we learned that the man who donated the tree had a stroke. His family is asking for people to send along Christmas cards to lift his spirits. You can find his address in this article

See you next week!

Christmas... in the News: Rockefeller Christmas Tree Arrives in NYC & The Touching Story Behind It & Idianola Man Decorates Entire Street as Early Christmas Gift for Wife

Welcome to this week's edition of Christmas... in the news. This is a weekly review of some of the Christmas articles and news over the last week.

Here we are again. Another week has passed. Can you believe there are only 6 weeks (45 days, actually) until Christmas? Like, how did that happen?

Are your decorations up yet? I haven't started, but Good Morning America has done a segment on the science behind how people who decorate early for Christmas are happier. You can watch it on YouTube. Let's haul out the holly!

This week, I truly wanted to focus on the human side of Christmas and the spirit of joy and peace that it can bring to this crazy world. I recently learned that this year's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is from the Berkshires (about 1.5 hours away from us). U.S. News reported yesterday about its arrival and who donated it. You can read that article here. Today featured a human interest story on the tree's origins. Earl Albert and his wife Leslie planted the tree in 1967 in West Stockbridge, MA. Before it grew to its current height of 74 feet, the Albert family used to decorate it. The tree caught the attention of the Rockefeller Center's head gardener, Erik Pauze, back in 2020, and he reached out the Alberts about it. There is so much more to the story. You can read it here.

And if the story of this year's Rockefeller Center's Christmas tree doesn't have you reaching for a tissue, then this next story will. KCCI8 out of Des Moines shared the story of John Reichart of Indinola, who, with the help of his neighbors, has decorated his entire street as an early Christmas gift for his wife, who is suffering from Alzheimer's. Click here to read more.

Would love to hear more feel good holiday stories from you if you would like to share.

Can you believe it's already November? How many of you are already listening to Christmas tunes? Did you know that Christmas music returned to SiriusXM Radio on November 1? I discovered that today while I was driving around showing houses.

We have so much fun news this week. WDW News Today shared that this year's Christmas tree has gone up in Magic Kingdom's Town Square. I've never been to Disney at Christmastime. Have you? I bet it's fun. You can read more about the tree's arrival here.

Deadline reported that Freeform has announced its '25 Days of Christmas' schedule. You'll find classics like Home Alone, The Grinch, and Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas in the line up. For the full schedule, you can visit their website.

In other exciting entertainment news, Good Housekeeping announced recently that Netflix will be streaming some of your favorite Hallmark Channel Christmas movies. Looking to learn more about which movies Netflix will be airing? Check out the article here.
